Tour of Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry

Hi guys my name’s Elen and I’m one of
the clinical dental students here at Birmingham. And I’m Reese and I’m one of
the preclinical dental students here. So today we’ve got the pleasure of showing
around a beautiful new dental hospital opened in 2016. We think it’s a fantastic
place and hope you’ll agree with us. Facilities are state-of-the-art and it’s
one of the best and only place I could imagine study in my degree. So if you and
follow us. We’ll take you around. So now we’re on the top floor of the dental
hospital. And for us as students what we’ll find here is the school office,
canteen in the common room which we’ll show you in just a bit.
If you take a look behind me to the beautiful view. You can see campus and
the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. On campus we’re very fortunate to have Old Joe –
the tallest freestanding clock tower in the world. You can actually drive a
double-decker bus through the clock place it’s so big. But we students try
to avoid Old Joe because this is a long-standing superstition that if you walk under it and the bell chimes you gonna fail your exams and we don’t want that. Nope.
So if you follow us now we’ll take you to the common room. So now we’re in the student common
room. This is a great place for us to come and relax and chill on the sofas
in between lectures and at lunchtime and play a game of pool.
So pool tables actually funded by our student society BUDs. It’s the oldest
dental student society in the UK founded in 1886. And we host loads of events,
non-alcoholic, alcoholics, sports which we can tell you more about in the Open Day.
if you come along. So if you follow us now we’ll take you through to the
canteen. Let’s go. So this is the canteen. Which we’re really
lucky to have on site because serve both lunch and breakfast which means we’re
never without food. So if your follow us we’ll take you down to the Learning Hub. Now at the Learning Hub. This is
where you can come to study in between lectures or at lunchtime. We’ve got lots
of different study spaces available. We’ve got a computer cluster over there,
As you can see behind me we’ve got a number of study booths each one is
equipped with plug sockets and a TV for you to plug a laptop into which makes
group work really easy. Next we’ll take you to the dental library so if you’d
like to follow us. Here we have a large variety of books and
online resources that are readily available to you. We also have some
different learning spaces to help you revise. Okay so this is the Clinical
Skill Suite. This is where you’ll spend a lot of time in third and fourth year
building up your skills and gaining confidence before treating patients. So
this is an example of a phantom head. It’s as close as you can get to a human.
You sit and use drills and you get plenty of experience and time until you
actually get onto clinic. It’s now going to take you to have a look at some of
our lecture theatres. So this is one of two of our lecture theatres at the dental
school. It can be opened up into one large lecture theatre and it’s where we
have most of our lectures from the clinical staff here at the Dental Hospital.
So thank you for joining us on this snapshot tour of our wonderful, wonderful
dental school. We hope you enjoyed it but to get a real taste for the dental
school and for university life and to get the opportunity to speak to staff
and students. Please make sure you come along to one of our open days. We hope to
see you soon, thank you. Bye.
