St. Petersburg College: Recycled Tunes

There are so many kids that I really
feel like music changes their life, and it gives them something to be passionate
about and gives them something to be proud of. Gasparilla Music Festival and
St. Petersburg College partnered to put on the Recycled Tunes program. We
refurbish used instruments, and then we donate them to local schools. St. Pete
College is a huge partner for us in being able to collect those instruments in
Pinellas County and find good homes for them in schools throughout the Bay area. Kids
that were having a lot of trouble in school were able to get an instrument,
and it really just changed the course of their life and hopefully for a long term
positive change. I had a child that came up to me, and I had given him an
instrument the first year. His dad is an alcoholic and had kept pawning his
trumpet. And the last time he could not get his instrument back. He prayed every
night for two weeks that he would be able to get a new trumpet, and I came to
school and gave him one. To see that child and to hear the impact that that
one instrument had on his life was so rewarding. Kids that interact in music
education at an early age test higher. They’re more emotionally adaptive, and
they’re more socially adaptive. Today we’ve collected over 300 used
instruments to give back to local children local schools. To be able to
empower a student and give them an instrument, give them something that they can hold on to and practice after school every day and actually have something that they
can take home and work on themselves, I believe it just gives them a sense of
empowerment, and you know, a part of being. a part of something.
