Shock Doc: Ally and Jenn Tozier, dental hygiene & nursing majors

– My name’s Jennifer Tozier. I’m a junior here
at Wichita State and I’m in the nursing program. – I’m Ally Tozier I’m a junior also here at Wichita State, and I’m in the dental hygiene program. But the first few years were —
I mean we had a lot of the same classes, we would try and take
stuff together if we could. You know, we had a little bit different
tracks with nursing and hygiene. – And freshman year we stayed in
Shocker Hall and we were roommates. So freshman year we were inseparable and
now we like barely see each other. It’s been a wild ride.
Going into it I prepared for it because everybody always talks about how
scary nursing school is but honestly it’s been an absolute blast and you know
I was scared going into it but honestly like taking these classes and getting
some of the hands-on experience so far is just showing me and proof that
I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be and has been so much fun so far. – We have the dental hygiene clinic
thanks to Delta Dental of Kansas. We have this awesome clinic that I’m
a first semester dental hygiene student and we’re working on each other
and getting that hands-on learning, which it’s an amazing experience,
I can’t imagine how I would learn it without just getting in there and doing it.
Pick up the instrument and try. So we always get
that opportunity. She’s taken my blood
pressure so many times. – I do some of the little stuff. – She’s done the vitals on me… There’s
some things you can’t practice on me That I’m not gonna let
you practice on me. – They don’t let me take like
needles home and, you know. – I wouldn’t let her
do it if they did. – No but the little stuff, I practice all
sorts of like auscultating lung sounds – Yeah, she listens to my heart
and my lungs and just really practice that. Without this clinic, I don’t know
how I’d be learning this information, without these hands-on labs,
I don’t know how I’d get this education. And that’s that’s
what sets it apart. We’re the only bachelor’s degree
in the state of Kansas for a reason. Because we have the things
that we have for these students. We come out with the
knowledge we need to apply these skills and to do
the job at the end of the day. – I think there’s also a testament to
our professors at Wichita State. My professors are just some
of the most wonderful people, and it’s just so refreshing to
get to meet these people because meet your peers, but to have these
elders that are really trying to grow you into wonderful people really
says a lot about our University.
