Meet your Dentist: Richard Thomas, DDS | Dental Group West | Toledo Dentist

Dr. Richard Thomas: I grew up all over the
country. I was born in [Casey 00:00:09], Pennsylvania
and I’ve lived in Michigan, Pennsylvania, California twice, cross-country back and forth,
so I’ve had an interesting childhood. I used to spend summers with my grandparents
and my grandmother would leave bowls of candy all over the house, so I spent a lot of time
in the dental chair. Thank goodness I always had very good dentists,
and I was always intrigued with it and interested in it. My educational background, I went to Michigan
State University, got my bachelors degree in medical technology, worked in the hospital
lab setting, and I did basic scientific research here in town at the University of Toledo. I talked to my family dentist, who used to
work here actually years ago. It seemed like a good fit, so I applied to
Case Western Reserve University and got accepted there, and I actually now teach at the University
of Toledo Medical School here in town. They have a dental graduate program. The part that I enjoy the best … I think
I enjoy all aspects of it. When I first got married, I discovered early
on that my wife was a terrible dental phobic. I didn’t know that, and so she taught me a
lot about how to be gentle and careful in how we take care of patients and it’s rewarding. Then of course the bigger cases, when you’re
doing a smile makeover for example, you can totally change a person’s appearance and it’s
very exciting to see that happen. When I’m not working, I enjoy doing woodworking. We moved to a townhouse about an hour away,
close to the lake. I had to fill some of the rooms up with furniture,
so I enjoy that very much. I’ve taken up an old childhood hobby, building
model cars, and that’s been a lot of fun, because there’s a whole community of people
out there that do that. We’re close to our family, two adult children
in the Cleveland area and a third in the Columbus area, so we’re fortunate to be pretty close,
so the kids and the grandkids come up and we have a lot of fun.
