The Learning Resources Center is a place where you go to stay a successful student. You can go in there being successful and you can come out being successful and ready. The Learning Resource department here at St. Petersburg College is a great place for students to go and get tutoring for science, math, help with computers. We also have a geek bar there and that’s for help with your computer if it crashed or you have a virus they can help you figure that out. Usually students will raise a flag needing help in class. “I need help with this, where can I go?” and almost always the answer is Learning Resources Center. The way that it has helped me to succeed in my classes has been that I’ve gotten tutoring from – especially in math I have a hard time with math. So as a teacher, I see students that are using the Learning Resources Center as very successful. They are working hard, they are trying to understand things. If they do understand things, they’re helping other people understand things, and they’re also seeing the path that they’re on. It used to be like a library was where you went to get books, checkout books… now at St. Petersburg College it has become somewhere where students can go and get all of their references, all of their help that they need tutoring for specific classes that they’re in. It has become more helpful towards the student being successful. So the Learning Resources Centers, they’re located in a space that’s meant to be open, it’s meant to be vibrant so it doesn’t have to be quiet. We’re not in a book museum you can, you can talk to people about things, you can joke, you can be there for non-academic reasons. They are glad to see you when you walk in the door. I mean they’re there for us, that’s why they’re there. So they’re happy when they get to help someone. I think St. Petersburg College did a really good job in picking our tutors because these people are extremely helpful and very kind. From the south part of the county like Midtown all the way up here to the north part of the county, Tarpon Springs, there is a Learning Resource Center – a room, a physical space – that’s available to all students who need it. All of the things we’ve been talking about in terms of advising, tutoring, and assistance with classes, and planning, that’s available at all of our colleges as well. Every single one of our campuses is dedicated to Student Success, and so we’ve built space, we’ve dedicated our space to this, and so it’s just a matter of finding that space and maybe walking into it for the first time, wherever you are.
