Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association racing series is underway

John: WELCOME BACK TO “LIVING 808.” WE’RE LEARNING AND PRACTICING THE SKILLS THAT HAWAIIANS HAVE USED TO SAIL. WE’RE LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE HAWAIIAN SAILING CANOE ASSOCIATION, AND A SPECIAL TREAT AS I GET TO CATCH UP AND INTERVIEW MY FORMER HIGH SCHOOL TRACK TEAMMATE. THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION. THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US. THIS IS COOL. I HAVEN’T SEEM YOU FOR A WHILE. YEAH. John: IT’S IKAIKA. THE ASSOCIATION’S BEEN AROUND FOR 31 YEARS. STARTED BY MY UNCLE AND FAMILY BACK IN ’87. AND NOW I TOOK IT OVER. AT PRESIDENT. John: CONGRATULATIONS. HAVE THAT TITLE. FROM THE BIG ISLAND TO KAUAI. WE STOP ON ALL THE MAIN ISLANDS ALONG THE WAY. AND OUR MISSION STATEMENT IS TO LEARN, REVIVE, PRACTICE, EDUCATE THE ANCIENT ART OF SAILING CANOES AS IT RELATES TO HAWAIIAN CULTURE. John: THAT’S GREAT. WE APPRECIATE THAT. I’M SURE THE COMMUNITY APPRECIATES WHAT YOU’RE DOING. WHAT ARE SOME SKILLS INVOLVED WITH CANOE SAILING? YOU NEED TO BE A PADDLER. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO OPERATE A CANOE. AND BE COUPLE THAT WITH SAILING. KNOWING HOW TO SAIL AND OPERATE SAIL IT. AND POINTS OF SAIL REACHES. DO. BUT WE TRY TO KEEP — EVEN WITH THE MODERN DAY TEARLESS, WE TRY TO KEEP OUR CANOE AS TRADITIONAL AS POSSIBLE. EVERYTHING IS LATCHED TOGETHER. TRADITIONAL SHAPE OF A CA CANOE AS John: WITH THE EDUCATION THAT EVERYBODY’S RECEIVED WITH THE RECENT HOCK HOKULEA SAILING, THAT’S A BIG DEAL. TO RECONNECTED TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN CULTURE, HOW ARE YOU DOING THAT? WE’RE TRYING TO DO A LOT OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH THIS YEAR. WE DO CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY DAYS WHERE IT’S LIKE A MINI CLINIC. WE TEACH PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT WE DO AS SAIL OVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND HOW WE HELP TO TAKE CARE OF THAT. AND THEN WE TAKE PEOPLE OUT ON A SHORT LITTLE EXECUTION IN OUR SAILING CANOES. AND PEOPLE GET A GREAT SENSE OF CONNECTING ALL OF THAT — ALL OF OUR HAWAIIAN CULTURES WHEN YOU’RE OFF AT SEA AND YOU LOOK BACK AT THE LAND. WE’RE TRYING TO TIE ALL THAT IN WITH WHAT WE DO AS WE TRAVEL THROUGH THE ISLAND CHAIN, CARRYING THAT MESSAGE TO A LOT OF THESE REMOTE LOCATIONSES. WE LAND IN HANA, MOLOKAI, KAUNAKAKAI. WE TRY TO TOUCH AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. John: YOU’RE SEEING THE STATE FROM A DIFFERENT PEC PERSPECTIVE. YOU GO THROUGH — SEPTEMBER. WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RACE SEASON. WE HAD OUR THIRD WEEKEND EVENT THIS PAST WEEKEND. WE WENT FROM MAUI TO MOLOKAI AND OAHU. CANOES ARE IN WAIMANALO BEACH PARK NOW. ON THE 14TH WE SAIL TO KUALOA. AND THEN FROM THERE, WE GO TO HALEIWA. AND THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER BIG CULTURE DAY EVENT OUT IN HALEIWA ON AUGUST 18TH. John: OKAY. AUGUST 18TH. THAT’S THE SATURDAY BEFORE OUR TITLE RACE, WHICH IS FROM OAHU TO KAUAI. THAT’S A 90-MILE ROUSE. John: MY GOODNESS. 90 MILES. TAKES 12 HOURS. John: I DON’T KNOW THAT I’VE HEARD OF THAT. THAT WAS THE ORIGINAL. THAT WAS THE KICKOFF. BACK IN 1985 THE MAYOR CHALLENGED A GROUP OF HAWAIIANS TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE YEAR OF HAWAIIANS WHICH IS 87 EM. THAT CHALLENGE BY THE MAYOR SPAWNED THE RACE, WHICH WHICH CARRY ON TO THIS DAY. John: HOW CAN SOMEBODY GET INVOLVED? JOIN A CANOE CLUB. LEARN HOW TO PADDLE. ABOUT SAILING. DO SOME LITERATURE ABOUT SAILING. BEST WAY IS TO COME DOWN TO THE EVENT. , ALL ON OUR WEBSITE. INTRODUCE YOURSELF. TALK TOLD CAPTAINS. THEY’RE OPEN TO MEETING NEW PEOPLE AND BRINGING NEW FOLKS ONBOARD. IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE, I’M SURE SOME PEOPLE WILL TAKE YOU. John: PERFECT. THAT INFORMATION WILL BE ON OUR WEBSITE. WE WILL LINK ALL OF YOU THAT ARE INTERESTED TO THEIR WEBSITE. WE APPRECIATE YOU COMEN ON. THANK YOU. John: THANKS. YOU’RE ONE YEAR IN. PRESIDENT OF THE HAWAIIAN SAILING CANOE ASSOCIATION. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. COMING UP ON “LIVING808” U LOOKS LIKE THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE
