Fall Mid-Semester Presidents Message 2019

Fall Mid-Semester Presidents Message 2019

Hello Broncos, With fall semester more than halfway behind
us, I wanted to share a few items of important campus news. We recently welcomed to campus the accreditation
team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. University accreditation ensures that we are
meeting the standards of performance for a high-quality education. The accreditation process is also an opportunity
to tell the Cal Poly Pomona story. It is a chance to reflect on our achievements
and better understand how we can improve. Our preparation for the site visit represented
a significant campus effort. I want to thank all those involved in the
reflection, self-study development, and planning, as well as all the faculty, staff, and students
who shared their experiences and insights at meetings with the visiting team. I look forward to sharing the results of the
accreditation process with you when we receive the final report in March. I hope that you took note of the recent announcement
that Cal Poly Pomona was rated the number two public university in the Western United
States as part of the U.S. News and World Report rankings of regional universities. This is wonderful recognition of our quality
and value. We rose two spots from number four last year
and received recognition in the rankings for both innovation and excellence in undergraduate
teaching. I also note that we were one of only two campuses
to be named among the top ten overall among public institutions as well as a top performer
on social mobility. As I shared in a campus-wide email last week,
CSU Chancellor Timothy White announced that he will retire next June. Chancellor White has been a transformational
leader for the CSU and a true champion of student success. The search for a new chancellor is starting
immediately, and I have been asked to serve as a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Committee,
made up of faculty, students, staff, and alumni, that will work in concert with the trustees
to inform the process and facilitate broad engagement among stakeholders. As a first step in this process, we are conducting
a series of open forums across the state over the next two months. Our campus will host a forum on Friday, November
22, from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Student Services Building Multi-Purpose Room. I invite you all to attend and share your
insights on the qualities and experience we seek in our next chancellor. Finally, I’m pleased to share a new resource
that showcases the distinctive qualities of a Cal Poly Pomona education – a website
that highlights “Our Polytechnic Advantage.” Drawing on stories from across campus, the
site brings to life the eight elements of an inclusive, polytechnic university that
our faculty articulated as part of the Academic Master Plan. Through news stories, videos, and the personal
experiences of your fellow Broncos, “Our Polytechnic Advantage” serves as a window
to the world of the amazing things happening on our campus. You can visit the site at www.cpp.edu/polyadvantage. I also invite you to view our latest installment
in the Difference Makers video series, which focuses on the essential work being done by
our Staff Council to support employee wellness, community, and to celebrate the contributions
of our talented staff. The link for the video is in the description
below. I hope you all have a successful remainder
of the semester and thank you for all that you do for Cal Poly Pomona.
