DR. RICHARD W. STEINBERG, DDS: Dental implants
are for people with missing teeth; whether it be one missing tooth, or several missing
teeth. They’re utilized for situations where they have to give extra retention for a denture
for example, all the way to a single tooth implant, which replaces a single tooth. Now
in the past we’ve had the options of utilizing partials, which are removable and bulky, or
fix bridges which require cutting down adjacent teeth to attach a bridge that’s non-removable.
Now with implants you’re utilizing a procedure where, in most cases, we don’t have to do
any real major surgery, we don’t have to do incisions and things like that. We can
place an implant into the bone, because we know where it goes number one, before we get
there we get a CAT scan that we can utilize. The CAT scan gives us a three dimensional
image of the bone before we get there so there’s no surprises for us. We know how dense the
bone is, we know how deep we can go, we know where the nerves are and things like.
So the implant is placed into the bone, and then that implant is allowed to integrate
into the bone, and then a crown or a bridge abutment is placed on there, and restore the
missing teeth, as though the root had grown back; but it’s titanium now. The process is
quite quick. As far as the actual appointment for the placement of the implant, it would
probably less than an hour appointment. Now during that time when there’s a lot of fear
the patients normally have, but I will assure you that we’ve had extremely few people that
have had any discomfort at all. In fact, it was less discomforting than the extraction
of a tooth. As far as the actual procedure is concerned, the implant is placed, and then
it’s left to heal for three to four months. And you can’t push Mother Nature very much
on that. At that point, as long as we’ve got integration
of the implant, which means that it’s firmly attached to the bone, we can start building
the restoration on that. But at that point it’s a very quick procedure; we’re replacing
abutments, we take the impressions, or digital impressions in this case, and then we place
the final restoration. Three neat advantages of implants, number
one they look like natural teeth. Number two, they function like natural teeth. And number
three, and foremost, they’re very easy to take care of.
