Dental Hygienist: Health Sciences at Hudson Valley Community College

Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients
for signs of diseases and provide other preventative dental care for a wide variety of patients. They also work to educate patients on ways
to improve and maintain good oral health. As more evidence continues to show oral health
tied to overall physical wellbeing, the importance of the dental hygienist in the health care
system will only grow. Like dental assistants, most hygienists work
in an office setting, with a practice of one or more dentists. Hygienists can work in specialty dental practices
and community dental clinics as well. To become licensed in their state, all dental
hygienists must pass two licensing exams after completing a two-year accredited program of
study. Students interested in a career as a dental
hygienist must prepare by taking courses in biology, chemistry and math. A strong high school foundation in science
and math is important to ensure admission to a dental hygiene program. In New York State it is an associate’s degree,
a lot of states it is a bachelor’s degree but in New York State it is an associate’s
degree. You do need a few credits, a few prerequisite
classes, sciences, to get into our program at Hudson Valley. There is opportunity to go on for a full bachelor’s
degree within SUNY at several institutions and some of them are fully online so it’s
very doable and I can accomplish it myself within three semesters even full-time online
and working full-time. Here at Hudson Valley Community College, the
responsibilities of the dental hygienist include providing optimum care to patients we either
find or they call for appointments from around the community, and we educate them on personal
home care. Dental hygiene is great. It’s a very good mix of helping people,
science background and lab work. And there’s never an end to the education
so it’s great for people who always want to learn something new. There’s always some kind of new invention
or new idea.
