ADA Member Spotlight: Dentist Giving Back

my name is Dr. Daniel Nam I’m a general
dentist I’ve been practicing for 15 years and my typical morning if I’m
lucky I get to play my piano for 30 minutes to an hour. Before dentistry I
thought I was gonna be a concert pianist or conductor, studying music at
UCLA and started a music production company. Played at many many weddings I
play because it heals my soul and there’s so many parallels in what we do
in the arts it’s like arts is not something we can
live without just like we can’t live without good teeth and gums. I went to
dental school at the university of Pacific School of Dentistry I had some
wonderful volunteer opportunities that I participated in as a dental student I
got to see for the first time how health care or providing health care for
somebody who didn’t have access to health care could be life-changing to
know that I have a skill set and if I’m willing to share it with somebody of
course their life has changed but so is mine
my good friend one day literally sent me an email saying. “I’ve already written your
letter of recommendation you are applying for this institute of diversity
leadership” so the institute for diverse diversity and leadership has been
extremely supportive and helpful on many aspects of my career just in the
day-to-day operations of running a practice I gained a lot of confidence in
knowing that there’s a network of other doctors who are have the same struggles
have the same triumphs who are trying to do their best to serve the community.
well good afternoon! we started just health five-10 where we’re going to be
able to serve a lot of veterans a lot of seniors low-income families with a lot
of the same tenants that we believed in that is that if you don’t have the means
or resources to pay for your dental coverage we will get it covered you know
ultimately I tell people I have no sick desire to do dentistry all the time but
once you know the need is there how can we not I love being a part of my
community I love being able to take care of others and I’m very proud to be a
dentist and part of proud to be part of the Institute for diversity leadership
and that ultimately of the American Dental Association so it’s been a great
15 years and I look forward to the next 15
